Classes and Lessons

All classes and lessons are taught by me in the Johnson City, TX area within 40 miles of zip code 78636. I will teach you in your home or in a location you arrange, privately or in a group of not more than 5-10 depending on the class. Classes or demonstrations for parties can be arranged at a group rate. For most classes and lessons all materials are supplied, see description for specfics. If you're looking for one on one lessons, my rate is $20 per hour not including materials.

Simple Bookmaking 1
Age Requirement: 14+
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $65 (all materials provided -- all to keep)
Learn basic bookbinding skills and make accordion books. Bring photographs to use inside or be prepared to draw or decorate the inside of your books.

Simple Bookmaking 2
Age Requirement: 14+
Prerequisite: Simple Bookmaking 1
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $55 (all materials provided -- all to keep)
Build on your skills from Simple Bookmaking 1 and make Japanese stitched soft books and paper wrappers to contain them in groups.

Introduction to Italic Calligraphy
Age Requirement: 10+
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $40 (practice pad, 2 sets of calligraphy pens, card with envelope, and direction with additional resources included -- all to keep)
Learn the basics of Italic Calligraphy and letter a quote or verse on a greeting card. We will learn and practice Italic letter forms and discuss pens, inks, paper, and reference books. Bring a short, meaningful quote to letter.

Introduction to Copperplate Calligraphy
Age Requirement: 12+
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $40 (pens, ink, practice pad, and card with envelope for project included -- all to keep)
Learn the basics of Copperplate script and letter a quote or verse on a greeting card. We will learn and practice Copperplate letter forms and discuss pens, inks, paper, and reference books. Bring a short, meaningful quote to letter.

Beginning Crochet
Age Requirement: 12+
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $40 (beginner book, two crochet hooks, and a ball of cotton yarn included -- all to keep)
Learn the basics of crochet! Teaches basic stitches and symbols used in patterns. Practice using combination of stitches to make a cotton dishcloth.

Filet Crochet
Age Requirement: 12+
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $40 (two crochet hooks, a ball of cotton thread, and a variety of vintage patterns included -- all to keep)
Learn the basics of filet crochet! Teaches basic stitches and symbols used in filet patterns. Practice using combination of stitches to make a small doily.

Hand Embroidery
Age Requirement: 12+
Prerequisite: none
Duration: 3 hours
Cost: $40 (includes all materials -- all to keep)
Learn the basics of hand embroidery and make a small sampler to frame or make into a pillow.

Illumination on a Mug
Age Requirement: 11+
Prerequisite: none
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $40 (includes all materials) or $100 for an hour party of not more than 10 guests
See different styles of illumination for letters to gather inspiration to design your own illuminated letter. Students will paint their illuminated letter on a glass mug to keep. Mugs, paint, and brushes are supplied. Mugs may be taken home the day of the class with instructions on how to bake the mug to set the paint or I will fire the mugs to be available to pick up the following week.

Origami 1
Age Requirement: 8+
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $30 (all materials provided -- all to keep) or $75 for an hour party of not more than 10 guests plus cost of materials
Learn the basic origami folds and create a variety of traditional classics, animals, flowers, toys, practical paper folds, party tricks, and decorative origami.

Origami 2
Age Requirement: 8+
Prerequisite: Origami 1
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $30 (all materials provided -- all to keep)
Learn more than just the basics and add to your origami repertoire. Make complex figures, flowers, and decorative pieces.

Paper Quilling
Age Requirement: 14+
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $35 (all materials provided -- all to keep)
Learn the basics of the almost lost art of paper quilling and decorate a gift tag, card, or gift bag to take home -- great to decorate a holiday gift!

Tsutsumi ~ Japanese giftwrapping
Age Requirement: 8+
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $30 (all materials provided -- all to keep) or $75 for an hour party of not more than 10 guests plus cost of materials
Learn the basic tsutsumi folds and wraps for all your giftwrapping needs -- great for a holiday party!

Beginning Watercolor 1
Age Requirement: 14+
Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $25 (student provides all materials)
Learn the basics of color mixing, watercolor washes, and wet on dry techniqes.

Beginning Watercolor 2
Age Requirement: 14+
Prerequisite: Beginning Watercolor 1
Duration: 2 hours

Build on your skills from Watercolor 2 and learn to work with watercolors with wet on wet techniques and creating highlights.

Beginning Watercolor 3

Prerequisite: Beginning Watercolor 2
Duration: 2 hours

Build on your skills from Watercolor 1 and 2 and learn to create other textures and effects and use other media to enhance your paintings.
